Birch Ridge Report: Cold weather always makes for a classic at Birch Ridge Golf Course

It wasn't easy, but we did it. We know again why it's called the Cold Weather Classic. This tournament was actually scheduled for Sept. 25, but could not be held as there was 2 inches of snow on the golf course.

On Saturday, on a cold (38 degree) and blustery day, 30 golfers, 15 men and 15 women, braved the elements and competed in the 16th Annual Cold Weather Classic. This is a man & woman Scotch double format (alternate shot).

The teams taking low gross were the Paula Crowley-Steve Dexheimer team, the Jane Tongen-John Tongen team and the Myrna Cowan-Pat Cowan team. Each team had a score of 83. It was so cold and wet that nobody would agree to a playoff. Pat and Myrna Cowan also were the low net winners, therefore Paula and Steve, and Jane and John, agreed to tie for low gross and split first and second low gross prizes.

Pat and Myrna won low net with a score of 62, but there was a tie for second place low net with a score of 63 between the Rhonda Dettmer-Al Dettmer team and the Pat Bird-Gary Effenbeck team. Those two squads also declined a playoff and split the second low net prize. The long drive honors went to Paula Crowley for the girls and to Gary Effenbeck for the boys. The closest to the pin honors went to John Tongen on No. 6 and to Jane Tongen on hole No. 8.

The annual meeting of the Birch Ridge Golf Association is scheduled for Oct. 20 at the Riverside House at 6 p.m. The activities of 2004 will be reviewed, the most improved golfers, both men and women, will be honored and various prizes will be handed out, including a free membership for the Birch Ridge Golf Course for 2005.

Birch Ridge Golf Course is still open for play on the real greens, so we hope to see you either enjoying these fall golfing rounds or at the annual meeting or both.
