Brown Bears split with Fresno

The Kenai River Borwn Bears Junior A hockey team split a series with the Fresno (Calif.) Monsters, dropping the second game of a two-game set Wednesday at the Soldotna Sports Center.

The Monsters scored three third-period goals Wednesday to defeat the Brown Bears 4-3 in North American Hockey League play.

Kenai River, now 6-6-1 overall, is off until Oct. 14, when the Brown Bear will host Dawson Creek. The Monsters improve to 4-3-1 in league play.

Kenai River opened the scoring with a goal from Alex Frere, assisted by Chris Rial and Doug Beck at 12:24 of the first period. The Brown Bears made it 2-0 early in the second period on Frere's second tally of the night. Raymond Stenehjem and Beck assisted on the play at 1:22 of the period.

Lucas Whelen put the Monsters on the board at 6:39 of the period, assisted by Jeffrey Pauluk and Matt Trisch. Kenai River answered late in the period as Zack Capozza netted a goal, assisted by Dominic Granato and Shane Topf at 18:38.

Fresno scored three goals in a span of 7 minutes, 19 seconds to take the lead in the third period. Josh Obregon sparked the rally, scoring at the 9: 12 mark, assisted by John Siemer and Walker Hyland. Martin Lundberg tied the game at 15:42, assisted by Obregon, and Matt Trisch gave the Monsters the lead at 16:31, with assists from Riley Borer and Lundberg.

Fresno picked up 91 penalty minutes along the way, including two game misconduct calls and three game ejections.

Beck leads the Brown Bears in scoring, totaling six goals and eight assists through 13 games. Chris Rial has five goals and six assists, while Brett Lubanski and Sean Muller each have three goals and eight assists.

Kenai River goaltender Josh Benton stopped 31 of 35 shots. The Brown Bears peppered Fresno goalie Louis Puig with 49 shots.
