Seahawks netters up to challenge

Homer High School hosted the Peninsula Challenge Friday and Saturday. The participating teams were the Seward Seahawks, the Soldotna Stars, the Kenai Kardinals and the Homer Mariners.

Seward beat Soldotna in the championship match Saturday. Seward won the first game, 15-9, and the second, 15-12. Soldotna won the third game, 15-9. Seward won the last game, 15-7.

Kenai defeated Homer, winning three of five games, to win third place.

The action began Saturday with Seward facing Kenai and Soldotna facing Homer in the best-of-three semifinals. The Seahawks beat the Kardinals, winning two of two games. The Stars defeated the Mariners, taking two of three games.

Each team played six games Friday. Soldotna won all six to get Saturday's No. 1 seed. Seward won four of six, Kenai won two of six and Homer was winless.

The following players made the All-Tournament Team in the Challenge: Alex Drathman, Homer; Joy Epley, Homer; Jamie Montgomery, Kenai; Erica Shinn, Kenai; Toni Gilbert, Soldotna; Danielle Kerrone, Soldotna; Hillary Zobeck, Soldotna; Gretta Besse, Soldotna; Erin Carr, Seward; Bathany Campbell, Seward; Carrie Fischer, Seward; and Paula Banic, Seward.
