A Nikiski man was killed in a car crash in Nikiski early Tuesday morning.
Robert Burns, 43, was driving his white, 1991 Ford van eastbound on Holt-Lamplight Road at 5:26 a.m. when he drove it off the right shoulder of the road, according to Alaska State Troopers. The van went through the ditch, hit a culvert and vaulted and rolled to a stop on the south side of the road.
Burns did not have a seat belt on and was thrown from his seat to the back of the vehicle in the collision. He sustained substantial injuries to the head and chest and was pronounced dead at the scene by Nikiski Fire and Rescue, according to troopers.
Burns' van had been reported to the Kenai Police Department as a REDDI (Report Every Drunk Driver Immediately) at 4:27 a.m. It was last seen heading north toward Nikiski.
Alcohol is suspected to be a contributing factor to the crash. A toxicology test will be performed by the state Medical Examiner's Office, troopers said.
