Salcha man drives car into party bonfire

Posted: Tuesday, October 09, 2001

ANCHORAGE (AP) -- A 19-year-old Salcha man drove his car into a bonfire at a weekend party near North Pole, Alaska State Troopers said.

Seth Stickfort drove his 1988 Ford Escort into the bonfire as a trooper was dispersing the crowd attending a loud party at a state-owned gravel pit, troopers said. The car was destroyed.

Stickfort told troopers he accidentally drove into the fire while trying to avoid another car.

Troopers said an estimated 200 to 300 youths had been drinking around the bonfire at the Saturday night party. It took three hours to clear the area.

Trooper spokesman Greg Wilkinson said the North Star Volunteer Fire Department was called to extinguish the blaze.

No youths were cited for consuming alcohol. Wilkinson said a sergeant at the scene determined the best way to control the situation was to order everyone to go home with a sober driver.
