Germano, Dyson race nears decision

Posted: Tuesday, October 09, 2001

The Kenai Peninsula School District Seat F race continued to boil as the margin between incumbent Deborah Germano and challenger Gene Dyson grew slightly from 20 votes to 27.

The last official count, recorded Monday before 4 p.m., showed Germano leading with 3,531 votes to Dyson's 3,504 votes.

Borough Clerk Linda Murphy said the canvassing board was counting questioned ballots that were filled out by voters who were either errantly omitted from polling registries on election day or who voted outside of their assigned precinct.

Because Monday was Columbus Day, a national holiday, U.S. mail did not run, stalling final tabulation of further absentee ballots.

Today final votes will be counted, including the last qualified absentee votes, and all votes will be certified this evening by the borough assembly.
