Nikiski football alumnus says thanks to this year's champions

To all the Nikiski football champions, I wish to express how proud I am of your accomplishments this year. You are top dog this year and I can only imagine what it feels like.

I want all of you to know that there have been many 'dawgs' before you that dreamed of a season such as yours. Much to our disappointment, most of us never came close. I was in the eighth grade in 1989, too young to play, but I will never forget the humiliation our team felt that year when we were handed an 89-0 defeat at the hands of the Soldotna Stars. It takes a lot of heart to walk off the field, game after game, knowing you were the losers again. That is how it was for five years. Every single game we played, we lost. Some games we could muster a touchdown, some games we couldn't. In 1993, my senior year, the last game of the season, we finally won our first game. Sure it was against a brand new school, by the name of Colony, but that didn't matter to us. To this day I can't remember the score, but it does not matter. We made history that day, we were the first Nikiski team to win a game.

You made history this year, in a big way, one that you probably can't understand. Forget the undefeated season and all the records that were broken. The Nikiski Bulldogs have risen from the bottom of the pile with class and dignity. It's good to see that the Bulldogs still have heart. I think I can speak for those that played in the season opener in 1989, it may have taken 11 years, but it still sounds just as sweet. Nikiski 20, Soldotna 14.

Congratulations on a job well done!
