The University of Alaska Anchorage hockey team topped Grant MacEwan College in an exhibition before 2,200 fans at the Soldotna Sports Center Saturday night.
UAA's defense had a solid evening, allowing only 25 shots by the visitors from Edmonton, Alberta, John DeCaro and Nathan Lawson, who are both looking to replace the graduated Christ King and Kevin Reiter, got the job done in net. DeCaro had 11 saves while Lawson had 13 saves.
Merit Waldrop, a forward from Dimond High School, had three assists on the night. His first assist got the scoring started 5:44 into the first period, when he fed Nick Lowe.
The Griffins tied the score two minutes later, but UAA took the lead for good on a goal by Shea Hamilton at 12:36.
Christ Tarkir, a forward from Fresno, Calif., then took command in the second period. Tarkir scored a pair of goals and Justin Johnson added another to salt away the victory.
