For over 20 years Jesse and Helen Tubbs of J&H Vacuum in Soldotna have been the local and Anchorage exclusive distributor for Pfaff sewing machines. Their loyalty paid off this year when Helen was the lucky winner of a trip to New York City and an appearance on the Martha Stewart Show where the new top of the line Pfaff sewing machine was to be unveiled. “I was at the Pfaff 2007 convention in Dallas, Texas and they held a drawing for two of their dealers to go to see Martha Stewart Live in New York City. The drawing was held at the end of the gala and I was totally shocked when they called my name,” Helen told the Dispatch. Helen’s husband and partner Jesse was invited to accompany her and actually postponed a trophy moose hunt to make the trip. “It was worth it though. We were seated in the VIP area and were suppose to appear as Pfaff representatives from Alaska, but two of the prior segments ran over and being a live show that cut into our segment so folks watching probably didn’t get to see us, but we did get to meet Martha and have photos taken with her, she was very pleasant and a real nice person,” said Jesse.

Tubbs says that Martha Stewart touted the new Pfaff as the best sewing machine in the world with the most advanced features, “She said she just loved it and has one of her own and actually all of that were there from Pfaff felt that she actually was pretty genuine and believe that she probably really sits down and sews on the machine.” When asked if he thought that Martha would have a chance of winning the only Treadle Sewing Machine race in the world held here in Soldotna Jesse replied, “Not in the high heels she had on for the show, but you never know we told her producer about the race and he took the photos we brought along and of course we invited Martha to come to Alaska and participate in the only Treadle race in the world, it’s our claim to fame,” he said.

Being the exclusive dealer for Pfaff is another claim to fame for J&H Sewing & Vacuum, and prior to winning the trip to NYC, the Vice President of Pfaff Ewald Cohrs from Germany, came to Alaska himself to demonstrate the all new Pfaff Creative Vision sewing machine, “There were only a few dealers that actually got an advance shipment of the machines, but because we are an exclusive dealer of Pfaff machines we got first choice, so Mr. Pfaff himself, as Ewald Cohrs is known, came and spent two days with us one in Anchorage and one here in Soldotna demonstrating the Creative Vision. He’s been with Pfaff for over 51 years and he made people special deals and we sold a bunch of sewing machines,” said Tubbs.

The whirlwind trip to NYC was the first time the couple had actually gotten off of a plane in the Big Apple, “I was there once with my parents when I was a little girl, but we had to stay in when my parents went out, this time we got to see the Lion King which frankly was my favorite part of the whole experience, it was amazing musical theatre,” said Helen. “It was kind of overload for me, going from Soldotna to Times Square in New York City is quite a culture shock and all in four days two of which were spent traveling,” added Jesse. To see the new Pfaff Creative Vision sewing and embroidery machine, stop by J&H Sewing & Vacuum in Soldotna at 222 North Binkley Street during winter business hours Monday Friday 10:00am 6:00pm and Saturday 12:00 noon 5:00pm, or call 262-6363 in Soldotna or 907-276-1000 in Anchorage.
