Longtime Kenai resident Steven O'Connor died Thursday, Oct. 7, 2010 at Central Peninsula Hospital in Soldotna. He was 61.
Memorial services will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2010 at The Soldotna Bible Chapel, 300 W. Marydale Ave. in Soldotna. Chaplain Keith Randall will officiate.
Mr. O'Conner was born Aug. 3, 2010 in Chicago. He attended Linn Benton Community College in Oregon and graduated from Western Oregon University with a Fire Science degree. Steven moved to Alaska in 1981 and lived in Kenai. He worked for the Nikiski Fire Department from 1981 to 1988. After leaving Nikiski he went to work for Central Emergency Services in Soldotna as the Assistant Fire Chief until he retired in 2005. Mr. O'Connor received the Governor's Friends of EMS award in 2010. He loved fishing, gardening, orchids and his cats.
His family wrote, "Steve was a special person his entire life. Our lives were greatly enriched by his presence. He is one of a kind. He will be sorely missed and we look forward to seeing him again in heaven. Steve was an inspiration to us. His character of gentle loving kindness towards all and his easy going perceptions into each individual's hearts will stay with us forever."
He is survived by his wife, Linda O'Connor of Kenai; mother, Marion Smith and step-father, John Smith, of Roseburg, Ore.; sisters, Marion O'Connor of Winston, Ore., Susan Wright of Florence, Ore., and Diana Smith of Roseburg; brother, Pat O'Connor of Atlanta; sister in-law, Sharline Crouch of Salem, Ore.; brother in-law, Scott Liesinger of Salem, Ore.; mother in-law, Patricia Liesinger and father in-law, Cecil Liesinger of Oakland, Ore.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Donations in memory of Mr. O'Connor may be made to the St. Baldrick's Foundation for Childhood Cancer, 1333 South Mayflower Avenue, Suite 400 Monrovia, CA 91016.
