JUNEAU (AP) -- A Juneau-area man fatally shot a bear that was trying to break into his house.

The man, whose name was not released, shot the sow Tuesday afternoon after repeatedly trying to scare the animal away from his front door of his Lena Cove home, said Neil Barten, a biologist with the state Department of Fish and Game.

The same sow and her cubs were captured, tagged and moved to another area over the summer after being caught around downtown Dumpsters for several weeks, Barten said. The sow returned without her cubs.

In recent days, the bear tried to get into pet doors and porches of area homes, looking for food.
