Soldotna mall hosts health fair

Everyone is invited to a health fair and food drive from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Peninsula Center Mall in Soldotna.

Included are a food drive for the Kenai Peninsula Food Bank and free blood pressure checks from Central Emergency Services, plus booths from the Women, Infants, Children (WIC) food program and area businesses offering health products and services.

The event includes free drawings, prizes and demonstrations.

Independent Blind meeting rescheduled

The monthly meeting of the Kenai Peninsula Chapter of Alaska Independent Blind, normally held on the third Monday of each month, will be held on the fourth Monday, Oct. 22, this month only. The meeting will be at 7 p.m. in the Fireweed Medical Center in Soldotna. Any interested people are welcome to attend. For more information, call 262-7061.

Soldotna chamber's pie auction Saturday

The Soldotna Chamber of Commerce's seventh annual pie auction will be held Saturday at the Soldotna Sports Center, starting at 6 p.m. Each pie has a secret prize attached, including a trip for two to Hawaii. Tickets are $20 each, and seating is limited. For more information, call 262-9814.

Soldotna Historical Society board meets Saturday

The Soldotna Historical Society board of directors will meet at 9 a.m. Saturday at the museum on Centennial Road in Soldotna. The public is invited to attend.

Fisherman's Fund meeting Tuesday

The Cook Inlet Fisherman's Fund regular monthly meeting will be held Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Cook Inlet Aquaculture Association Building on Kalifornsky Beach Road. For more information, call 283-7731.

Medical assistants to meet Tuesday

The Kenai Peninsula Chapter of the American Association of Medical Assistants will hold its monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Iliamna Room of Central Peninsula General Hospital. School funding workshop Wednesday

A public forum on learning how the state calculates funding for public education will be held Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Soldotna High School library. It will be conducted by former Kenai Peninsula Borough School District finance director Dick Swarner and current finance officer Melody Douglas. The public is invited and encouraged to attend.

Sci-fi adventure planned

The Challenger Learning Center of Alaska will host a Sci-fi Adventure Night on Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. The event will included a simulated space mission for adults only. The entry fee is $25, but anyone coming in a sci-fi costume will receive $5 off. Advance registration is required. To do so, or for more information, call 283-2000.

Swimming lessons planned

The next round of swimming lessons at the Soldotna High School pool will begin on Oct. 23. For more information, call 262-7419.

Potters Guild to host exhibit

The Kenai Potters Guild will accept entries to its 14th annual Kenai Clay Exhibition on Oct. 20 at the Kenai Fine Arts Center from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Potters in Southcentral Alaska over 18 are eligible. For more information, call Peggy Gill Thompson at 283-7827.

Travel stipends available

Frontier Community Services has travel stipends available to individuals with disabilities and their families who are interested in attending the Pathways 2001 conference in Anchorage Nov. 8-10. Kenai chamber to auction, raffle

The Kenai Chamber of Commerce's Festival of Bacchus will be held Oct. 27 at the Diamond Rose in Kenai. It is the 17th annual beer and wine tasting, auction and raffle. The event raises money for "Christmas Comes to Kenai." For more information, call 283-7989.

Men's city league basketball on tap

The Kenai Parks and Recreation Department is taking registration for the upcoming men's city league basketball league. The number of teams is limited. The registration deadline is Oct. 22, with league play beginning Nov. 12. Anyone interested in playing, score keeping or officiating should call 283-3855.

Clothing available for those in need

The Clothes Closet at the Women's Resource and Crisis Center in Kenai has free clothes for infants, children, women and men. The Clothes Closet is open Tuesdays and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, call Natalie at 283-9479.
