Seniors host movie night

Sterling Senior Center is hosting Friday nights at the movies through the winter. Today's movie will be "The Illusionist", starting at 7 p.m. Snacks will be available at 6 p.m. Popcorn and coffee is free, hamburgers and hot dogs are planned.

Cancer fundraiser Saturday

Cancer Survivors on Mount Aspiring will host a fundraising slide show at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Kenai Middle School gym. The featured speaker will be Scott Darsney, mountaineering guide, photographer and adventurer.

Darsney has climbed Everest, Denali (as a guide for Cancer Survivors on McKinley 1997), and many other peaks around the world. He also has been acknowledged by Jon Krakauer in his book, "Into Thin Air", and was mentioned in the book "Three Cups of Tea" by Greg Mortenson. Mortenson and Darsney were coming off K2 in the start of the book. Donations are accepted. Donated funds will help pay for children with cancer to attend camp.

Pie auction fundraiser set

Child Evangelism Fellowship will hold a pie auction fundraiser at 6 p.m. Saturday at Soldotna Bible Chapel.

The theme will be a country fair with entertainment, an informational program, door prizes and appetizers. It is open to the public. For more information, call Mike at 262-9605.

Special Olympics fundraiser set to dish

A spaghetti dinner fundraiser to benefit Special Olympics will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 159 Marydale in Soldotna. The cost is $6 per person or $20 per family. The money raised will help support Special Olympic athletes from the central peninsula.

Library host Sunday story time

Second Sunday Stories will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Kenai Community Library. The Kenai Performers will present "Tales from Around the World." For more information, call 283-4378.

Domestic violence workshop planned

The LeeShore Center will hold a community awareness workshop on domestic violence and sexual assault from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 22 through 26 at the center. Topics will include domestic violence, sexual assault, effects of domestic violence on children, the center's batterers' intervention program and volunteering with shelter clients.

It is open to the public. Attendees may participate in a portion or the entire workshop. Continuing education credit may be attained after completion of the workshop and 30 hours of volunteer work with the center.
