Water service interrupted today

Due to the Forest Drive and Redoubt Avenue construction project, Foster Construction reminds residents that water service for Redoubt Subdivision and the west end of Forest Lane will be shut off beginning at 10 p.m. today and will be restored by 6 a.m. Saturday.

Board of directors meeting canceled

The Kenai Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors meeting planned for today has been canceled. For more information, call 283-7989.

Dinner planned in Sterling

The Sterling Senior Center has scheduled a dinner for 6 p.m. today with proceeds going toward the United Way of the Kenai Peninsula. German beer, sausage, bratwurst and spetzel will be served. Cost of the dinner is $7.

Musician to sign CDs

Soldotna resident and recording artist Sherry Morris will be signing her new CD, "On the Wings," Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. at Fred Meyer in Soldotna. The CD, a collection of all original secular and gospel music, is the second for Morris.

Craft fair planned

The 11th annual Lasting Treasures Craft Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Kenai Senior Center. The fair will feature wood, ceramics, stained glass, polymer clay, Halloween treasures and more. For more information, call Linda at 283-1001.

Genealogy society to meet at library

The Kenai Totem Tracers Genealogy Society will host a genealogy research help session from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday in the conference room at the Kenai Community Library. The meeting is open to the public and free of charge. For more information, call Kari at 283-4258.

Fall field trip slated

Biologists from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game and the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service will take a field trip Saturday to look at Soldotna Creek. They will discuss the effects of a culvert on the passage of fish as well as the presence of northern pike in the creek's watershed. Those interested should meet at the gravel lot next to the forestry building in Soldotna at 1 p.m. and are asked to bring waterproof boots and warm clothing. For more information, call 260-5449.

Scholarship dinner set

The sixth annual Thelma McConnell Scholarship Fund dinner and auction will be held Saturday at the Unocal Camp in North Miller Loop Road. A roast beef dinner will begin at 6 p.m. with the auction beginning at 7. Tickets are $7 and can be obtained by calling 776-7654.

Ms. Ritz 2000 crowned at fund-raiser

The Cook Inlet Lions Club will hold a fund-raising beauty pageant at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Twenty area men will dress up as women and will be judged on answering questions, a talent session and appearance.

Admission to the show is $20, which includes a prime rib dinner starting at 6 p.m. All funds raised will benefit the Lions community activities and Special Olympics on the central peninsula. Tickets are available by calling 776-7652.

Opening reception planned

The Kenai Peninsula College Art Gallery presents recent paintings by artist Jim Evenson. The exhibition opens Monday and will run through Nov. 17. A special opening reception for the artists is scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday in the gallery. Live music and refreshments will be served. The event is open to the public.

Registration deadline approaching

The Kenai Parks and Recreation Department is currently accepting registration fees for its upcoming men's and women's city league basketball program. The number of teams is limited and will be taken on a first come, first served basis.

The registration deadline is Thursday and league play will begin Nov. 13. For more information, call 283-3855.

Raffle tickets still available

Friends of the Kenai Community Library will hold a fund-raising raffle through Oct. 25. The cost of tickets are $100 with a limited 300 sold. The grand prize will be $7,500.

A choice of two dinners will be held for all ticket holders. The first dinner will be held Oct. 27 with the drawing for the grand prize and other cash prizes. The second dinner will be held Oct. 28 and will include music. Both dinners will be held at the Kenai Eagles Club.

Mothers' group meeting planned

A group for pregnant woman and mothers with small children will meet at 3 p.m. Monday to discuss parenting issues at the Kenai WIC office located in the Seaman Building.

Contra dance planned

A family and community contra dance will be held Oct. 21 from 7 to 10 p.m. at Kalifornsky Beach Elementary School. Admission is $5 and those under 16 get in free with an adult. Participants are asked to bring clean, nonmarking shoes. For more information, call 283-9227.

Flu vaccine in short supply

The state Public Health Department will not have the flu vaccine available until mid-November. The vaccine may be in short supply; therefore high-risk clients will be the department's first priority. For more information, call 235-8857 or (800) 770-8857.
