Connor Barger, a sophomore at Homer High School, Emerson Quartan, also a senior at Homer High School, and Max Gillies, a sophomore at Nikiski Middle-High School, rehearse for the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District High School Honor Choir on Monday, in the Renee C. Henderson Auditorium at Kenai Central High School. The students were preparing for their performance tonight. The annual event starts at 6 p.m. at KCHS. The first half of the concert will feature three local adults: Chris Schrier will perform the first movement of the Hummel "Trumpet Concerto;" Audra Wasson Farris will perform "Walking In The Air" from "The Snowman" and "Pippa's" Song" by Ned Rorem; and Maria Allison will close this portion of the concert with Chopin's Deux Polonaises Opus 40, no. 1. The second half of the concert features the 2009 High School Honor Choir portion under the direction of Dr. Sigurd Johnson from St. Olaf College, located in Northfield, Minn. The students practiced Monday and Tuesday on their six pieces: Handel's "Coronation Anthem no. 4 - Let Thy Hand Be Strengthened;" Palestrina's "Sicut cervus"; the James Erb arrangement of "Shenandoah," "We are the Music Makers" by Jonathan Adams; Eric Whitacre's "Sleep" is dissonant; and ending with "Ngana" by Austrailian composer Stephen Leek.
The cost is $4 for adults, $2 for students and senior citizens.
