ANCHORAGE (AP) -- Contractors at Elmendorf Air Force Base have completed the removal of contaminated soil and debris from a construction site near the Boniface gate.

The contamination was discovered in June when workers found fuel in soil and a buried Quonset hut on a site being excavated military housing.

More than 800 cubic yards of soil and 500 cubic yards of debris were hauled away from the site. Clean soil was brought in to fill the excavated site, where 372 homes are being built by Aurora Military Housing.

Removing the contamination cost $1.52 million.
