Two people were killed and another two injured Saturday in a head-on collision on the Seward Highway.
Alaska State Troopers responded to the report of the accident at Mile 64.5 of the Seward Highway at 1:36 p.m. Saturday.
According to troopers, Erwin James Petterson Jr., 28, of Kenai, was driving northbound on the highway. He was speeding and reportedly took his eyes off the road to reach for a soda, swerving into oncoming traffic.
Robert Weiser, 60, of Anchorage, was driving a blue 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee southbound and attempted to swerve out of Petterson's path.
Both vehicles swerved in the same direction, however, and collided head-on.
Robert Weiser and his wife, Donna, 56, were both killed on impact. Witnesses were able to pull Donna Weiser's body from the vehicle, but could not recover Robert Weiser's body before the vehicle was engulfed in flames.
Petterson and his passenger, Jonathan Orin Douglas, 30, of Kenai, were taken to Providence Hospital by Lifeguard. Petterson suffered a broken ankle and broken ribs, while Douglas was treated and released from the hospital with minor injuries.
All parties were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident. Alcohol did not play a factor in the cause. Both vehicles were impounded in Anchorage, and the case remains under investigation by troopers.
