WRCC to hold workshop

The Women's Resource and Crisis Center will hold its Community Awareness Workshop on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault at Kenai River Center from 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Oct. 22 to 25. Topics to be covered include domestic violence, sexual assault, the effects of domestic violence on children, the WRCC Batterer's Intervention Program and volunteer opportunities with shelter clients. The public is welcome to attend. All volunteers working directly with clients must take this training. College credit may be given after completion of the training and 30 hours of volunteer work with WRCC. For more information and a class schedule, call 283-9479.

Applications available for Junior Miss program

The 2003 Alaska Junior Miss Scholarship Program, a franchised arm of America's Junior Miss, will be held Jan. 26 to Feb. 1 in Soldotna. The annual competition is part of a nationwide program to reward high school senior girls for their accomplishments. Contestants are evaluated on interviews, scholastic achievement, creative and performing arts, fitness and poise. The winner will represent Alaska in the national finals scheduled for June in Mobile, Ala.

There is no entry fee for the competition, and it is open to any young women graduating in the spring of 2003.

Homer Community School classes change

Homer Community School has announced one change to the fall program. "Beginning East Coast Swing Dance" will be offered Nov. 1, 8, 15 and 22.

Two other classes also have been added to the fall lineup. Kindergym, a class of movement and balance exercises for children ages 3 to 5, and Beginning Gymnastics, which includes floor and apparatus work for children ages 6 to 13, will be offered Saturdays from Oct. 26 to Nov. 22, except Nov. 15, at Homer High School. Kindergym meets from 10 to 11 a.m. and the gymnastics class meets from 11 a.m. to noon. The fee is $30.

Registration is still open for the following classes: Introduction to Homeopathic Medicine; Writing Your Life Story; Prairie Style Tote Basket; CPR/First Aid; and Choral Singing for Beginners.
