Area chambers set schedule

Chambers of commerce speakers for the upcoming week include:

Amy Manuel of United Way will speak at the Nikiski Chamber of Commerce meeting today at noon at Lighthouse Community Church. Brad Janorschke of the Homer Electric Association and Wally Hufford and Linda Zimmerman of Nikiski North Star Elementary School will speak Oct. 21. The Soldotna Chamber of Commerce will meet at noon Tuesday at the Riverside House. Janet Craig of Junior Achievement will speak. For more information, call Shanon Hamrick at 262-9814.

A state House of Representatives and state Senate candidates forum will be held at the Kenai Chamber of Commerce at noon Wednesday at Paradisos. Business tax workshop scheduled

A workshop titled, "Alaska Unemployment Tax Filing," will be held from 1:45 to 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Small Business Development Center, 43335 Kalifornsky Beach Road, Suite 16, in the Red Diamond Center. The workshop will focus on Alaska statutes, obtaining a state employer ID, contract labor and preparation and responsibility of employer state payroll taxes for first-time filers. Grant writing workshop slated

Strategic Grantmanship: When to Try and How to Succeed, a class offer by The Foraker Group, will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Oct. 22 at the Kenai Visitors and Cultural Center. Participants will learn how to write strategic proposals for grant funding.

Homer chamber to host candidates forum

The Homer Chamber of Commerce will host a forum for the candidates for Alaska House and Senate at noon Tuesday at the Best Western Bidarka Inn conference room. Invited to participate in the forum are Senate candidates Senator Gary Stevens and Mike Yourkowski and House candidates Rep. Paul Seaton, Deb Germano, Mike Heimbuch and Ed Martin. Tourism council to hold raffle

The Kenai Peninsula Tourism Marketing Council is selling raffle tickets for a drawing to be held Nov. 23. The prizes include a 2004 Polaris Sportsman 500 Hunter's Edition ATV, Natron Air and Alaska Legends Adventure Resort bear viewing getaway for two and Alaska River Adventures rainbow trout fishing for four on the Upper Kenai River. Tickets are $25 each or five for $100. Ticket sales will be limited to 1,000. You need not be present to win. For more information, call 262-5229.

Business plan competition scheduled

The University of Alaska Anchorage College of Business and Public Policy is accepting entries for the 2004 Business Plan Competition. This annual event promotes and nurtures new business growth in Alaska by offering contestants help and advice from experienced business mentors. Competitors also receive publicity and exposure to some of the Anchorage area's top business and financial leaders.

The competition is open to existing Alaska-based businesses and to those who expect to operate in Alaska in the future. Businesses must be owned or part-owned by at least one full- or part-time undergraduate or graduate student.

Profit and nonprofit businesses are eligible to compete. Businesses owned by Alaska Natives, or businesses that have or have had 8(a) status, are particularly encouraged to apply.

First place will receive a cash prize of $2,000 or entry and travel expenses for two student representatives to a National Business Plan Competition. Second and third place receive $1,000 and $500, respectively.
