ANCHORAGE (AP) -- Michigan State's John Nail scored in the third to give the Spartans a two-goal lead on way to a 5-4 victory Friday over the University of Alaska Anchorage in the Johnson Nissan Classic season opener.
Nail scored at 3:43 and goalie Ryan Miller got the assist.
UAA's Mike Scott scored at 11:36 to close to within one. The Seawolves pulled their goalie in a failed attempt to tie the game before 4,875 fans.
The Seawolves dominated the No. 7 Spartans early in the game but Michigan State came on strong for the rest.
Michigan State got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead when Adam Hall scored at 11:35. It took UAA less than a minute to respond and tie the score. A minute and a half later, UAA pulled ahead 2-1 when Steve Cygan put it in the net at 13:42.
Michigan State tied the game at 2-2, and took the lead early in the second quarter on a Brian Maloney power play.
UAA won 15 games last season, the most since the Seawolves went 15-19-2 in the 1993-1994, their first season in the West Coast Hockey League.
