Bear baiting information available on Web

Posted: Friday, October 15, 2004

In response to questions received from the public, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game has posted factual information on black bear baiting to its Web site. The information is in the form of frequently asked questions and is easily accessible via the Internet.

Fish and Game is posting this information in preparation for the November election, when voters will consider an initiative that seeks to prohibit the hunting of black bears over bait statewide in Alaska.

"Because we have had so many requests for information on the matter, we have decided to post the information on our Web site, where it will be easily accessible," said Matthew Robus, director of Fish and Game's Division of Wildlife Conservation.

The Web site includes information on the use of bait to take black bears, state regulations controlling the technique, nuisance bears, and the impact of baiting on bear harvests. The Web site can be viewed at http://www.wildlife.alaska.gov/aawildlife/bear_baiting.cfm.
