NLC voting is all Stars

Soldotna dominated the Northern Lights Conference postseason voting, which was announced on Sunday.

On Saturday, the Stars completed a 10-0 season by winning their second-straight small-schools state championship. En route to that state championship, the Stars won their second-straight Northern Lights Conference crown, blowing out each of the conference's other five teams in the process.

That dominance showed as SoHi had eight players on first-team offense and six players on first-team defense. Skyview had three on first-team offense, while Homer, Kenai and Kodiak had one apiece. Kenai had three on first-team defense, while Homer and Kodiak each had two.

The Stars also were well represented in the major awards. Seniors Ryan Shelton and Josh Denna were named Co-linemen of the Year, while Timo Gleason was named Defensive Player of the Year. Kenai's Bill Chimphalee was Offensive Player of the Year, while Homer's Camron Wyatt was Head Coach of the Year and Skyview's Bill Hancock was Assistant Coach of the Year.

Four of the five members of Soldotna's senior offensive line made the first team, with Josh DeTavernier at guard, Shelton and Denna at tackle and Les Baker at center. That group paved the way for 3,096 yards on the ground during the regular season.

Picking up the bulk of those yards were junior quarterback Anthony Griglione, senior halfback Bryce Gardner and senior fullback Marvin Tate. In the regular season, Griglione had 952 yards rushing, Gardner had 840 yards rushing and Tate had 740 yards rushing. Gardner also made the first team as a return specialist.

Soldotna also had the top defense on the peninsula, allowing just 1,439 yards in the regular season. First-teamers on that side of the ball for the Stars were Tate at outside linebacker, Gleason at inside linebacker, Griglione and Gardner at defensive back and Denna and Shelton at interior line.

Chimphalee, a senior, earned first-team halfback honors by rushing for 2,023 yards. He also made the first team at defensive back, and was joined by senior inside linebacker Jaron Dambacher and senior interior lineman Travis Pierce.

Skyview was represented on first-team offense by senior tight end and long snapper Richard Shirnberg and senior guard Patrick Sheridan.

Making the first team for Homer were sophomore kicker Mark Walsworth, junior utility player Corey Sutherland and punter Brady Quinn.

Finally, Kodiak, the runner-up in the conference, was represented on the first team by senior wide receiver Jon Bryant, senior outside linebacker Randy Diocares and senior interior lineman Josh Bailor.
