Missing hunter finds search party on Afognak

Posted: Monday, October 16, 2000

KODIAK (AP) -- A hunter missing overnight because he was treed by a bear walked into his rescuers' camp on Afognak Island Saturday, according to the Coast Guard.

Mark Werley, 39, spent much of the night in a tree to avoid a bear and her cub, he told the searchers.

Werley went on a deer hunt near Seal Cove on Afognak Island about 5 p.m. Friday with another crewman from the fishing vessel Golden Chalice.

The two men went in different directions, and the other crewman returned to the boat alone. When Werley didn't return to the boat, crewmen reported him missing about 10 p.m.

A Coast Guard helicopter was launched to look for Werley late that night, but didn't spot him, since the hunter had wandered far from the search area.

An early-morning patrol Saturday didn't locate Werley either, according to the Coast Guard. The helicopter returned later in the day with a search and rescue dog team.

The helicopter crew and the dog team were just eating lunch in a timber clearing when Werley reached them.
