Search for hiker suspended

ANCHORAGE (AP) -- A search for an Eagle River man who never returned from a day hike in Chugach State Park has been suspended.

Norman Baker, 25, was reported missing to Anchorage police by his parents Oct. 8. His van was found Thursday morning near Mile 7 of the Old Glenn Highway. Troopers organized a search but those efforts failed to find anything Thursday and Friday, trooper spokesman Greg Wilkinson said.

With a foot of fresh snow on the mountains, troopers decided to suspend the search effort out of concern for the searchers' safety, according to Wilkinson. He said a helicopter used in the search won't go back up to look for Baker unless the snow melts.
