Criminal charges won't be filed in pedestrian death

Posted: Wednesday, October 16, 2002

JUNEAU (AP) -- Criminally negligent homicide charges will not be filed against a driver whose pickup truck struck and killed the 77-year-old granddaughter of Juneau's co-founder, Richard T. Harris.

The family of Sophia Harris said it plans to file a civil lawsuit against the driver, Theodora L. Johnnie, 22.

The Juneau District Attorney's Office told police there was insufficient evidence to support a charge of criminally negligent homicide, police said Tuesday.

The accident occurred Sept. 21 as Harris was crossing Glacier Highway at a crosswalk.

Police recommended a negligent homicide charge, a felony, to the district attorney late last month.

Neither drugs, alcohol or excessive speed appeared to be factors in the incident, police said.
