State Senator Tom Wagoner presents Herman & Dorothy Hermansen with a legislative citation in congratulations of their 60th wedding anniversary at the Kenai Chamber luncheon.

It was a happy day for the Hermansen family of 7, as they gathered at the Kenai Chamber of Commerce to see their parents Herman and Dorothy of Coho Loop receive a legislative citation in honor of their 60th wedding anniversary. The proclamation recognizing their 60 years of marriage as well as the couple’s extensive community service was presented by State Senator Tom Wagoner and came just in time for their 62nd anniversary, “The legislature may not move too quickly and I apologize for that but Herman and I go way back as original members of the Cook Inlet Aquaculture Association and he and Dorothy are truly deserving of this recognition,” stated Wagoner.

When asked the secret to the longevity of his marriage, Herman replied having a lot of girls to boss you around and a long beach to walk along. Dorothy said, “No one said it would be easy, but the good Lord is always there watching over us all. He has given us a wonderful family and a lot of friends to help us through it all and I love them all.” The Hermansen’s have commercial fished on Coho Beach since the days of the fish traps prior to statehood and have taken the good times with the lean ones, “My parents have just gone through it all and their love for one another and their love for their community and family gave us all a lot of security and incentive for us to be whatever we wanted to be,” said daughter Karen. “It was an honor to be here today to stand beside them, they are a tribute to everyone,” added daughter Randy. The oldest of the Hermansen girls Linda graduated from Kenai High School and recalled her recent 40th class reunion, “The first night I went to the reunion everyone I saw asked me how my mom and dad were doing and where they were, so the second night I brought both my parents to my 40th class reunion and that has to be a first, that girl was brought to her 40th class reunion by her parents,” laughed Linda. Dorothy and Herman Hermansen on their way to forever together, and Senator Wagoner may just pre-file their 70th Anniversary citation at the start of the coming session.
