NLC, GLC award honors

Selections show distribution of prep football talent

Posted: Tuesday, October 17, 2006

Both the Northern Lights Conference and the Great Land Conference announced postseason awards on Monday from voting conducted by the leagues’ coaches.

The Northern Lights Conference was ruled this year by Soldotna. The Stars finished 5-0 in the conference and then went on to win the first state football championship in the school’s history.

A look at the major awards in the NLC shows the Stars had to overcome some talented players to accomplish their feat. Austin Roberts of Soldotna was the only member of the Soldotna club to win a major award. Roberts was named lineman of the year.

The offensive player of the year went to Stuart McFarland of Kodiak, while the defensive player of the year went to Greg Bosick of Skyview. The coach of the year was Todd Cook of Kodiak, while the assistant of the year was Dave Jones of Kodiak.

The Great Land Conference had parity at the top, and it showed in the postseason awards. Houston, Nikiski and Eielson tied at the top of the league standings with 4-1 records. Nikiski was the loser in a three-way coin toss, making Eielson the No. 1 seed from the GLC in the playoffs and Houston the No. 2 seed.

The offensive player of the year in the conference went to Nick Rogers of Eielson, while the defensive player of the year was Nate Rogers of Valdez. Caleb Adelmann of Seward was the lineman of the year, while Norman Bouchard of Houston was the coach of the year.

Soldotna had the most players on the NLC first-team offense with five. Both Kodiak and Skyview had four, while Homer had one.

The Stars led the Kenai Peninsula in offense with 2,794 yards in the regular season. Of that total, 2,398 came on the ground. All the Stars’ first-team members were heavily involved in that ground attack.

Fullback Mike Reed had 904 yards rushing in the regular season and running back Bryce Gardner had 479 yards. Helping pave the way were tackle Josh Denna, guard Roberts and center Les Baker.

For Skyview, Bosick made the first team as both a running back and return specialist. Bosick led the peninsula with 1,280 rushing yards. Also representing Skyview on the first team were kicker Jake Bauer, who had 15 extra points and two field goals, and long snapper Richie Shirnberg.

Homer was represented on the first team by Eric Rasmussen.

On defense, the selections once again pointed toward a balance in talent. Homer, Kenai, Soldotna and Kodiak had three selections, while Skyview had one selection.

Homer had the top defense on the Kenai Peninsula, allowing just 1,320 yards. The Mariners were represented on the first team by defensive back Taylor Layland, interior lineman Steve Kohout and utility player Collin Hagen.

Kenai was just behind the Mariners, allowing 1,382 yards. Defensive back Bill Chimphalee, interior lineman Michael Dormady and inside linebacker Stuart Stretch made the first team.

Soldotna’s first-teamers were outside linebacker Kelly Seggerman, interior lineman Roberts and punter Anthony Griglione.

Bosick made the first team as a defensive back.

In the Great Land Conference, a balanced and potent offense earned Nikiski seven spots on the first team. Eielson had four, Houston had two and Seward was represented by guard Adelmann.

The Bulldogs passed for 1,078 yards and rushed for 1,055 yards during the season. The general of the attack was quarterback Corey Smith, who finished 59-for-129 for 930 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Also on the first team were fullback Tyler Payment, who rushed for 277 yards, and tight end Josh Vance, who caught seven balls for 111 yards. Other Bulldogs named to the first team were tackle Jaramiah Hundley, center Hunter Gallien, return specialist Kenny Fagan and long snapper Elliot Tuttle.

Houston had five defenders on the first team, while Nikiski and Eielson each had three and Seward had Adelmann and Valdez had one.

Representing the Bulldogs were Payment at inside linebacker, Beau Calderwood at defensive back and Fagan and utility player.
