ANCHORAGE (AP) -- An inmate was injured when a van taking nine prisoners from Wildwood Pre-Trial Facility in Kenai to Seward's Spring Creek prison hit a moose just outside Soldotna, Alaska State Troopers said.

The inmate fractured his heel in the crash Saturday near Mile 92 of the Sterling Highway.

Another van was sent to pick up the prisoners, who were taken back to Wildwood, troopers said. Inmates who said they were hurting were then driven to Central Peninsula General Hospital for treatment.

The van struck the cow moose at 7 a.m. when the animal started across the road, according to troopers. All of the van's occupants wore seatbelts.

No citations were issued.
