JUNEAU (AP) -- An 86-year-old pedestrian died after he was hit by a car on a Juneau street, police said.

Lloyd Dedrick was struck Wednesday night as he tried to cross Mendenhall Loop Road near Tongass Boulevard. He was pronounced dead at Bartlett Regional Hospital about an hour later.

Police said no charges were pending against the 45-year-old woman who drove the car. But police did cite her for failure to show proof of insurance.

The accident occurred at about 7:40 p.m. when Dedrick crossed the street in front of traffic. Police said the woman didn't see Dedrick until it was too late.

Sgt. Ben Coronell said the woman could not have avoided hitting Dedrick. Coronell said the night and rainy conditions likely made it difficult to see Dedrick, who was wearing dark clothing.

Dedrick probably underestimated the time he had to cross, Coronell said.
