Soldotna resident Mateland Clinton Smith Jr. died Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002, at Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage. He was 88.
No local services are planned at this time.
Mr. Smith was born Jan. 24, 1914, in Ivanhoe, Okla. He served in the United States Navy during World War II, from Dec. 10, 1943, to Feb. 4, 1946, earning two bronze stars.
Mr. Smith was a construction worker for the state of California until his retirement Jan. 31, 1977. He moved to Alaska in June 2002.
He enjoyed Zane Gray books and other Western novels, gold panning and walking.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Margie Smith of Soldotna; daughter, Zelma Quick of Soldotna; sister, Agnes Hicks of Colorado Springs, Colo.; grandson, Matthew Quick of Anchorage; granddaughters, Holly Boerner of Forest Grove, Ore., and Sandra Quick of Edmonds, Wash.; and great-grandchildren, Alexis and Gabrielle Quick of Anchorage and Rebecca Boerner of Forest Grove, Ore.
Arrangements were made with Evergreen Memorial Chapel.
