Liquidation World opens its doors in Soldotna
The former Gottschalk’s store location in Soldotna, which was the former Lamont’s, which was the former Soldotna Drug Store, which was built by Earl and Alice Mundell around 1976, sprung back to life last week as the new home of Liquidation World. The Soldotna store is the 106th Liquidation World store to open according to Jerry Voeller, U.S.A. district manager who was on hand for store’s recent grand opening, “We’re excited about opening a new outlet here on the Kenai Peninsula for our unique retail environment. Our other store in Alaska is in the Northway Mall in Anchorage. Liquidation World has 105 other locations in the U.S. and Canada and after doing our market research we decided this would be a great place for our next store,” Voeller told reporters at a grand opening preview reception.
Pioneer community developers Earl and Alice Mundell were on hand to do the official ribbon cutting. The Mundell’s constructed the building in 1976 as the new home for their Soldotna Drug store which had outgrown its former location where Beemun’s Variety Store has been for the last 17 years. The Mundell’s were happy to welcome Liquidation World to the community and said they felt the outlet would meet a special niche market in the community.
According to Voeller Liquidation World specializes in purchasing large quantities of merchandise from wholesalers or retailers that may have gone out of business, or been slightly damaged from smoke or other causes and offers them at prices greatly below their normal retail value. “It’s a different kind of shopping experience, we are always bringing in new things so what you see here today may be gone tomorrow and when you come back next week you might find new items we didn’t have before. It’s really fun and gives folks a reason to come in and look around whenever they are out shopping,” said Voeller.
And come they did. Shortly after the ribbon cutting and grand opening Saturday, check out lines extended to the back of the store, “We had high expectations for our opening, but we have far exceeded them and are already outpacing the other 105 stores in sales,” said store manager Mark Haselow. Haselow has worked in retailing in the local area for the last 20 years and is thrilled with the community response, “This is a new retailing experience for our staff, which has all come for the local area. It took us a few days to get familiar with the new systems, but the lines are moving much faster now and we certainly appreciate everyone’s patience. We have sold a lot of merchandise, but rotating merchandise is what we do and what makes us different, there is a lot of new stuff on its way as we speak and we look forward to continuing to make Liquidation World a fun shopping experience through out the year,” added Haselow. Assistant manager for the local store is Lisa Tomlin who also expressed her excitement about her new position. Liquidation World is open Monday through Saturday 10:00am to 7:00pm, and Sunday’s 11:00am to 5:00pm.
