School will use donation to help families with emergency needs

Sears Elementary was recently the recipient of a generous financial gift from Post 10046 VFW Ladies Auxiliary. The Sears' family is most appreciative of the VFW members' sensitivity to community needs. The sharing of these resources will be used to help families and parents who have emergency needs. This random act of kindness exemplifies the great community we all live in and share.

Reader appreciates Berg's column explaining evolution of our forests

I would like to thank Ed Berg, ecologist at the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, for his informative and very interesting article from Oct. 3.

It has been so devastating to lose our trees to the bark beetle. To have this explained in his article makes one understand the evolution of our forest.

Thank you for directing the readers to the Web site for the 1899 Harriman expedition. Your efforts are appreciated, and you deserve accolades.
