ANCHORAGE (AP) -- A 21-year-old man is accused of trying to take alcohol into the dry community of Manokotak in his skiff.

Alexander Mochin of Manokotak was arrested Tuesday after engine trouble forced him to land with two passengers near Kanakanak, Alaska State Troopers said. Mochin was charged with driving while intoxicated, attempted importation and furnishing liquor to minors, troopers said.

Mochin was being held at the Dillingham jail in lieu of $500 bail and a court-approved third-party custodian.

Troopers learned Mochin's skiff was adrift with engine trouble in Nushagak Bay around 4:40 a.m. Tuesday and started a search-and-rescue operation. Mochin and his two passengers paddled the skiff to shore at Kanakanak beach, where troopers met them and found alcohol on Mochin, Sgt. Rick Quinn said.

Mochin had been drinking and had given alcohol to one of his underage passengers, Quinn said. The two passengers were not arrested.
