Funny River area homesteader Wanda House died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003, at her son's house in Battleground, Wash., from complications of emphysema. She was 73.

There will be a celebration of life and potluck at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Sterling Senior Center.

Burial will be in the Cooper Landing Cemetery next to her grandson, Leelynn Chumley.

Ms. House was born Feb. 15, 1930, to Earl and Ruby Jackson in Texon, Texas. She lived in Texas and New Mexico before moving to Alaska in the early 1990s to homestead on the Kenai River in the Funny River area.

"The homestead was not only a source of joy to her, but to her family and friends, as well, who loved to go there to fish, barbecue, play cards or just hang out. She was known by most as 'Granny' and will be sorely missed," her family said.

Ms. House was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Ruby Jackson; and brothers, Robert and Ray Jackson.

She is survived by her children, Linda and Leon Smith of Sterling, Joe and Jackie Chumley of Battleground, Lee and Karen Chumley of Battleground, Hugh "Scooter" and Linda Chumley of Sterling, Eddie Joe House and companion, Terry, of Soldotna, Barb and Norm Blakeley of Sterling and L.D. "Stick" and Cathy Ellsion of Snead, Ala.; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; brothers, Bill Jackson of Ukiah, Calif., and John Jackson of Kenai; numerous nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews; and many friends.
