East boys, girls sweep Kenai Invite

Posted: Sunday, October 19, 2003

Behind dominant wins by Chris Meyer in the 100-yard butterfly and 100 breaststroke, the East High Thunderbirds boys swim team cruised to victory Saturday at the Kenai Invitational swim meet.

Meyer, one of the state's top swimmers in both the butterfly and breaststroke, also helped East to wins in the 400 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay, as the T-Birds easily outclassed second place Homer 114-87.

Following the meet, Meyer said he expected to do well at Saturday's meet, even though East traveled all night after swimming Friday at Chugiak.

"I just swam the way I have been the whole season," Meyer said of his four-win day.

Meyer said he had a good time with all the winning Saturday, but he's now a little anxious to get back to Anchorage after the grueling weekend.

"We pulled an all-nighter, and now we're going back," he said.

East head coach Joleen Smith said she thought coming down for the Kenai Invitational would be a good chance for her team to get in some good work while at the same time doing a little team bonding.

"I just wanted the team to go do something fun together," Smith said.

Smith's plan seemed to work, as East's girls team also won, beating out second place Homer by a narrow seven-point margin.

"I think it was fun for all the kids," Smith said.

Not only that, but the meet was a bit of a homecoming for Smith, who helped the Kenai girls to a Region III title in 1991.

"The kids were looking up at the (Kenai records) wall and saying 'You're up there, Miss Smith,'" she said. "It was fun."

Although the boys team competition wasn't all that close, it wasn't just T-Birds winning races Saturday. In fact, two swimmers from the south peninsula provided some of the most exciting moments of the meet.

Seward's Jong Kim and Daryl Wythe battled furiously to see who was the fastest freestyler Saturday, though by meet's end, neither could fully claim to be the peninsula's fastest. In the 50 freestyle, Wythe managed to barely hold off Kim, winning by just one-tenth of a second.

When the two met again in the 100 freestyle, it was Kim who got the best of Wythe, nipping his rival by two-tenths of a second.

Seward head coach Janet Van Driessche said she was happy with how her Seahawks performed, even though Seward finished at the bottom of the team standings.

"Every meet they're taking time off," Van Driessche said.

That includes Van Driessche's daughter, Jacqueline, who turned in a season-best time of 1:10.37 to win the 100 breaststroke. Van Driessche also won the 50 freestyle something she's used to as the state's top female swimmer at that distance.

The Skyview Panthers, who took third in both the boys and girls competitions, got a fine performance from Stephanie Lambe, who won the 200 freestyle and took third in the 500 freestyle. Lambe also anchored the Skyview 200 freestyle relay team, which finished second to Homer.

Kenai got wins from Landon Mishler in the 200 freestyle and Mike Retone in diving to take fourth in the boys competition.

The Kenai girls were led by freshman Amy Jahrig, whose second-place finish in the girls 100 backstroke helped the Kardinals to a fourth-place finish. Kenai also got a second place from Madison Gifford in diving, as well as a fourth-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay.

The most exciting race of the day came late in the meet, as Homer and Skyview fought to see who had the fastest boys 200 freestyle relay team.

After getting a fast opening swim from Merrick Jackinsky, the Panthers took control of the race early. It appeared as if things would stay that way, as the second and third swimmers for East and Homer appeared to be fighting for second place.

But then Homer's John Brennard Sheffler hit the pool, and things began to change.

Brennard Sheffler flew off the blocks and immediately began to chip away at Skyview's lead, relentlessly chasing down JM Revis over the first 25 yards of the final leg. As the two swimmers made the turn for home, Brennard Sheffler continued to churn the water, much to the delight of the large contingent of Mariners fans who traveled north for the race.

Revis tried valiantly to hold off the Mariners' charge, but Brennard Sheffler was just too strong, winning the event for Homer in a time of 1:48.98.

The win gave the Mariners a big boost, though not quite enough to overcome the deep, talented East squad. But although both the Mariners boys and girls teams could do no better than second, they did turn in a number of fine individual performances, including wins from Renae Rykaczewski in both the girls 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke; and Anthony Augusto, who won the boys 500 freestyle race.

The Homer girls also swept all three girls relay events, winning the 200 medley relay in 1:57.17, the fifth fastest time in the state this year.
