Oilers sign a pair of Jayhawks for 2007
Sophomore first baseman Preston Land will join the Oilers. The 6-foot-3, 250-pound first baseman is now attending the University of Kansas. As a freshman, he appeared in 57 games and hit .314 with nine home runs and 33 RBIs. After Land’s senior year in high school, he was named 2005 Kansas City Player of the Year. He led his team with a .493 batting average while belting 14 home runs and collecting 49 RBIs. Land calls Overland Park, Kan., his home.
Sophomore right-hander Paul Smyth will join the Oilers pitching staff. The 6-0 right-handed pitcher is now attending the University of Kansas. As a freshman, Smyth made 36 relief appearances and compiled a 5-1 record and 37 strikeouts in 54 1-3 innings. As a senior in high school, he led his team with 10 wins and a league best 2.10 ERA. Smyth calls Atascadero, Calif., home.
