Fairbanks city council considers pay cut for new mayor

Posted: Monday, October 22, 2001

FAIRBANKS (AP) -- Fairbanks Mayor Steve Thompson has been in office only two weeks and already he's facing a pay cut -- through no fault of his own.

The move is the result of a standing ordinance, according to ex-City Councilman Charlie Rex. ''What the ordinance stated was when we got a new mayor, the salary would be set at $65,000 a year,'' Rex said.

The pay cut, being introduced at Monday night's City Council meeting, would cut more than $10,000 from the mayor's current $76,628 salary.

Rex was not sure when the ordinance was passed, but noted it would have applied to ex-mayor Jim Hayes had the council not decided to spare the returning incumbent a pay cut.

Thompson said he had no problem with the loss of wages. ''I didn't run for office for the money,'' he said.
