New cross-stitch club set to meet

A counted cross-stitch group is forming for beginner and advanced stitchers. The group will meet Thursday at 7 p.m. at Sterling Needleworks in Soldotna. Interested stitchers can bring a project to work on, something for show and tell or just themselves. For more information, call Joan Broderick at 262-9458 or Sherry Bradshaw at 260-7490.

Educational haunted house planned

The staff from Portage Valley presents their third annual haunted house. This frighteningly education experience will allow visitors to come face-to-face with a short-eared owl, get the low down on decomposition or just go batty. The Alaska Natural History Association will award door prizes. The haunted house is free and takes place at the Begich, Boggs Visitor Center in Portage Valley Saturday from 1 to 6 p.m. For more information, call 783-3242.

Table tennis season to start

The 2001-02 table tennis season is beginning and organizers are looking for new players this year.

The group meets Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. at the Soldotna Elks Lodge. Anyone interested, no matter their skill level, may attend and play. Call Ray at 262-7415 or Gary at 335-2847 for more information.

Post office deadlines coming up

The United States Postal Service reminds senders that deadlines for sending Christmas packages are approaching. Air mail and air parcel post items shipped to Africa, Europe, Canada, Australia, Central and South America, the Middle East, Asia and the Caribbean need to be shipped by the end of November to arrive by Christmas. For rates and other sending deadlines, contact your local post office.

Homer Community School announcements

A new fall class, Baby/Children CPR and First Aid, will be offered Nov. 3. This class is geared specifically for child caregivers and people working in youth programs such as the Boys and Girls Club. It is offered through the American Heart Association. The fee is $85.

An adult basketball league will begin Nov. 12. Team lists and fees need to be in to the Community School office by Nov. 6.

The Landscapes: Acrylic Painting class date has been changed to Nov. 27 and 28.

Canning Big Game and Avalanche Awareness still have spaces available. Call 235-6090 for more information.
