Man wounded; Soldier held

ANCHORAGE (AP) -- An Anchorage man was in critical condition Sunday after an altercation that escalated into a shooting, according to Anchorage police.

Pfc. Ronnie Gaines, 22, was charged with assault in the early-morning shooting of Johnathan Walker, 21.

The incident began when two women got into an argument at a club and drove to a local lakeside park to fight each other, police said.

Then the two men, both romantically involved with one of the women, got into an argument about 4 a.m.

Witnesses told police Gaines then pulled out a .22-caliber pistol and shot Walker several times.

Gaines was arrested without incident at his barracks at Fort Richardson. He's was taken to Cook Inlet Pre-Trial Facility. He's charged with first-degree and third-degree assault, plus evidence tampering.
