Anderson said the program started on the peninsula in spring 2000. Five teachers are chosen each semester and receive a $500 savings bond. One teacher is chosen from the five as teacher of the year and receives an additional $1,500 for furthering education and a bronze plaque that sits on an engraved jade slab.
