Soldotna bans smoking in restaurants

KENAI (AP) -- Lighting up in Soldotna restaurants is now illegal.

The Soldotna City Council voted unanimously Wednesday to ban smoking in all city restaurants. Smoking will still be allowed in bars that do not serve prepared food items, as well as bar areas of restaurants, separately ventilated from the rest of the restaurant.

The council listened to two hours of public testimony from opponents and proponents of the ban before voting.

Supporters focused on the rights of citizens to breathe clean air while dining out.

Opponents said individual business owners, not the city, should individually decide whether to allow smoking.

Following the meeting, Mayor Dave Carey said he'll consider a veto of the ordinance.
