Era Aviation added two flights between Kenai and Homer on Thursday to accommodate any travelers left stranded due to road closures.
Flight 880 departing Anchorage at 5:30 p.m., which is normally a nonstop flight to Homer, now stops in Kenai to pick up any travelers needing to get to Homer. The flight departs Kenai at 6:05 p.m.
Flight 879 departing Homer at 3:25 p.m. now stops in Kenai before continuing to Anchorage.
A one-way fare of $30 is being charged on these flights between Homer and Kenai only.
To further accommodate travelers, Era has temporarily upgraded the size of its aircrafts on these flights and many other flights out of Homer. Flights that are normally serviced by Twin Otters are now using the Dash-8, and the normal Dash-8 flights are now using Convairs, said Paul Landis, senior vice president of Era Aviation.
"We have been putting larger aircrafts on some of our regular flights out of Homer and they fill up almost immediately," he said. "It appears a number of people haven't gotten the news about the road closures yet and start driving then turn around and go to the airport and need to get on a flight right away. We're trying to get out in front of that need and anticipate the demand."
According to a press release from Era, the extra flights will remain on the schedule for the next few days and Era will watch the situation on a day-to-day basis.
"We'll be there for the community," Landis said.
For flight information and reservations, Era's reservation number is 800-866-8394.
Landis asked passengers to be patient when calling for a reservation as all available lines have been taxed to the maximum.
"We are trying to get extra agents on, but there's only so many lines," he said. "Callers can anticipate a wait but we will get to them."
