Knowles' record on education scores better than Murkowski's

As an educator with 28 years of experience, education is important to me. After researching the records and proposals of Tony Knowles and Lisa Murkowski, I have decided to work for Tony Knowles.

During his time as governor, the state began the Quality Schools Initiative. Most of the real reforms in education came out of that effort. Tony worked with the Legislature to rebuild schools. There is a new middle school under construction in Seward, thanks to policies Knowles championed.

Lisa Murkowski supports No Child Left Behind (NCLB), in spite of the fact we know the law can't succeed, especially in Alaska where unfunded mandates harm every student in every school. NCLB was based on the "Texas Miracle." The Texas Miracle was a fraud.

The school district in Houston claimed almost no dropouts, yet review of their actual performance indicates almost 50 percent drop out. Not exactly a goal for Alaska's schools.

Texas started to equalize the scores of racial minority students, but they have done it by lowering the top scores, not by raising the bottom ones. If Alaska supports NCLB, we can get our SATs down to the level attained by the Texas Miracle.

If Lisa's homework on other issues is as poor as it is on education, we need a new senator. That senator is Tony Knowles.
