Solomon gets AFN's highest award

Posted: Sunday, October 27, 2002

ANCHORAGE (AP) -- Jonathan Solomon, the Fort Yukon orator and traditional chief, has received the Alaska Federation of Natives' highest award.

Solomon, 70, received AFN's citizen of the year award on Friday at the group's annual convention being held in Anchorage.

Solomon is probably the pre-eminent Native leader to speak out against oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

In issuing the award, AFN, which supports environmentally sound development of ANWR, cited Solomon's fight against drilling to protect the Porcupine caribou herd and the traditional way of life of the Gwich'in Indians.
