Restitution accepted in Chena Fire

FAIRBANKS (AP) -- Two cabin owners who lost buildings in a fire this summer at the end of Chena Hot Springs Road have agreed to restitution amounts.

Magistrate Ronald Smith ordered Asger Hoyem to pay Doug Crevestan $27,910 and Ray, Julie and Jacob Wegner $175,000 for the destruction of their cabins.

Hoyem, 37, unintentionally started the fire on May 23. He pleaded no contest June 27 to charges of not having a burning permit, not having an adequate fire break and allowing the fire to escape. He was sentenced to do community service.

Hoyem was burning trash in a burn barrel without a suitable screen cover, and embers from the barrel ignited nearby dry grass and quickly spread in the hot and dry conditions.

Firefighters needed a week to control the blaze, which threatened 50 other cabins.
