Petersburg declared King of the Mountain in Seward

Posted: Sunday, October 27, 2002

Flooding didn't deter most of the state's top 1-2-3A wrestling teams from attending the King of the Mountain tournament in Seward Friday and Saturday.

In fact, the only teams unable to make the event were from the southern Kenai Peninsula, where this week's flooding washed out portions of the Sterling Highway, preventing Seldovia and about half the Ninilchik team from making the trip.

"It was a pretty good mix," said Seward coach Ronn Hemstock. "Some of the schools there are going to be vying for a state title, so it was quite a stiff competition. Those guys are all looking at being in the hunt, and it was a pretty good mix."

Petersburg was first in the team standings, edging out Anchorage Christian Schools, Valdez and Kotzebue, all squads looking to take home some hardware when the state championship rolls around in December.

Seward wrestled to a seventh-place finish, led by Zach Coots' second-place finish at 103 pounds.

Seward also notched a pair of third places as Erick Amberg (130) and Doug Jones (215) each won by pin in the consolation finals.

"Quite a few youngsters just learning the sport did well, too," Hemstock said.

Ninilchik also had a pair of placewinners in Steven Miller, who took second at 135, and Levi Russell, who won his 160-pound consolation final match by decision.
