Knowles no friend to fishermen

Posted: Friday, October 27, 2006

I’m a lifelong Democrat and commercial fisherman since 1966.

When Tony Knowles was governor he caused great and continuing harm to my family and the entire fleet in Cook Inlet by making politically self-serving appointments to the Board of Fisheries. The BOF systematically dismantled the Cook Inlet salmon management plan, placing so many restrictions on fisheries managers that they are no longer able to manage fisheries biologically.

Facts show that escapement goals in the Kenai River have been dramatically exceeded in 5 out of the past 6 years, due to the restrictions enacted by the Knowles BOF.

It is a fact that the economic harm to fisherman, processors and the labor force in Alaska resulting from the Knowles BOF amounts to many millions of dollars. It is a fact that recent over escapements to the Kenai River has had extreme adverse effects on the amount of food source available in Skilak Lake for emerging fry. Future sockeye runs in Cook Inlet are in serious jeopardy because of Tony.

Tony’s past actions speak louder than today’s political promises. I am one of thousands of fisherman, hundreds of cannery workers and dozens of processors who have experienced severe economic harm due to Tony’s cronies on the BOF. I believe Sarah Palin will take better care of our fisheries.
