SoHi, Homer swimmers split

Posted: Sunday, October 28, 2001

Although Homer and Soldotna split their Saturday dual swimming meet -- each team's final of the year and a possible preview of the top competition for next weekend's Region III championships -- a good time was had by all.

The Mariners boys won with 132 points over Soldotna's 115 points, while Soldotna's girls team defeated Homer 159-126.

"They're just having fun," said Homer coach Trent Fischer of his team. "A lot of (our) kids are swimming different events. They're swimming good and they're having fun."

Soldotna coaches shook up their roster as well, letting the team try some different events. Head coach Sohail Marey even gave one of his record-setting girls 200-yard relay team members a chance to do something completely different. Sophomore breaststroke swimmer Karina Petersen participated in the diving competition and placed second.

"It's our last meet," Marey said. "I just put her in to have fun. She's the future of SoHi diving. She's a talented all-around swimmer."

Petersen, along with Jenna Syverson, Amberlee Query and Abby Kiffmeyer, won the girls 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1 minute, 55.10 seconds. Petersen also won the girls 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:14.60. She said, however, she likes diving more.

"Diving is a lot more fun and less stressful," Petersen said. "But, I'll stick with the breaststroke. I've put a lot more time into it."

Following the the same race Petersen won, a contingency of Homer swimmers -- both girls and boys -- waited for sophomore teammate Amy Velsko to finish so they could sing "Happy Birthday" to her.

She emerged from the sixth lane of the pool to receive a multi-colored balloon, a chocolate cupcake, cards and a bouquet of irises.

"It was a surprise," Velsko said between bites of her cupcake.

Rhiannon Jennings said this was their way of showing appreciation for a teammate on her 16th birthday.

"It's our last meet," Jennings said. "And she's really supportive of the team. And she works really hard."

In spite of the generally relaxed air of the meet, there were still moments of fierce competitiveness between the two teams. In the boys 500 freestyle, Mariners junior Ben Kuhns latched onto Soldotna's Nick Sorrell, nearly beating Sorrell.

"Ben's swimming a terrific race," Fischer said. "Nick's up there in the top in the state and Ben's sticking with him."

Sorrell finished first with 5:07.56, beating Kuhns' 5:07.74 by less than half of a second.

In the boy's 50 freestyle, Jake Bell was trailing Sorrell before the race's only turn, but overtook the Star coming out of that turn.

Sorrell, who had the state's second best time in the boys 200 freestyle, and the third best in the the 100 breaststroke, going into Saturday's meet, said the experience was sobering.

"Homer is doing really well," Sorrell said. "They really showed us that we can't consider ourselves invincible."

Implications for the regional finals in Homer could not be ignored, however. These two teams will go head to head again, and the stakes will be higher. Fischer was unable to gauge his team's performance in the regional finals based on Saturday's showing.

"I don't know," he said. "We're not evenly spread out. I can guarantee that they'll swim fast and they'll do good."

Marey said he expected good things from his team, as well.

"The better they (Homer) do this week," Marey said, "the more our kids will step up to the challenge in the regionals."

Fischer said he was looking forward to the competition and to more of what his swimmers experienced at Soldotna Saturday.

"Soldotna's a good team," he said. "Valdez is tough too. It should be a fun meet."

The Region III swim meet will be held in Homer Friday and Saturday.
