Area chambers set schedules

Chambers of commerce speakers for the upcoming week include:

District 34 State House candidates, Mike Chenault and Glen Martin will speak at the Nikiski Chamber of Commerce meeting today at noon at Lighthouse Community Church. Lunch is available for $10. For more information, call Judene Van Cleave at 776-5551.

The Soldotna Chamber of Commerce will meet at noon Tuesday at the Riverside House. Christine Gehrett and Sherril Miller of the Kenai Peninsula College education program will speak. Lunch is available for $10. For more information, call Shanon Hamrick at 262-9814.

A representative from British Petroleum Alaska will be the featured speaker at the Kenai Chamber of Commerce at noon Wednesday at Paradisos. Lunch is available for $11. For more information, call the chamber at 283-7989.

Tourism council to hold raffle

The Kenai Peninsula Tourism Marketing Council is selling raffle tickets for a drawing to be held Nov. 23. The prizes include a 2004 Polaris Sportsman 500 Hunter's Edition ATV, a bear viewing getaway for two and rainbow trout fishing for four on the upper Kenai River. Tickets are $25 each or five for $100. Ticket sales will be limited to 1,000. People need not be present to win.

Cellular One launches award, updated Web site

Cellular One from Dobson Cellular Systems announced the debut of its Hometown Hero awards and a updated Web site.

The award was created was a way to recognize outstanding individuals in the Kenai area who have gone out of their way to make it a better place to work, live and play. Recipients will receive a plaque of recognition and a new EVO (tm) phone from Cellular One.

Nominations will be processed online now through the end of the year. To nominate someone for the award visit and click on the "Hometown Hero" icon on the right-hand side of the home page.

The updated site will allow customers to purchase Cellular One phones, accessories, rates plans and have access to special features like sending text messages and managing their account online.

Photo preservation workshop slated

Creative Memories will host its annual Croptoberfest from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., 2 to 6 and 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the Soldotna Middle School library.

The event is to encourage preservation of family photos and stories in safe and meaningful photo albums.

Participants are asked to bring their own photos. Meals are provided.

Technology grant writing workshop planned

Technology Research and Development Center in Alaska in conjunction with the Small Business Development Center will hold a workshop on the basics of Small Business Innovation Research-Small Business Technology Transfer.

Participants will receive an overview of business grants for developing innovative technologies for various government agencies, learn the importance of matching research themes, proposal development and commercialization planning.
