Kenai places 6th at Lancer Smith; Seward nabs 7th at ACS Invitational

The Kenai wrestling team placed sixth and Soldotna seventh at the Lancer Smith Tournament at Palmer High School on Saturday.

Chugiak won with 208.5 points, ahead of East (168.5), Kodiak (149.5), Colony (132.5) and Wasilla (114). Also from the Kenai Peninsula, Homer took 10th place with 62 points.

The only champion from the peninsula was Soldotna's Nathan Strieby, who won the heavyweight division.

Homer's Ben Daigle (125 pounds) and Eric Weinfurter (152) both placed second; SoHi's Wes Mills (135) placed second; Kenai's Tyler Taplin (285) finished second while Kyle Rogers (171) took third.

Seward places seventh at ACS Invite

The Seahawks took seventh place in the 36-team ACS Invite on Saturday behind strong performances from Brandon O'Brikis, Dylan Beck, Alan Logan and Jonas Romero.

O'Brikis (215) won the title by earning a 3-2 decision over Barrow's Michael Gonzales, while Beck placed third, Logan took fourth and Romero finished fifth.

Also from the peninsula, Nikiski took 14th, Ninilchik placed 19th, Seldovia claimed 25th, Voznasenka finished 32nd and Cook Inlet Academy placed 35th.

Ninilchik's Austin Vanderford, who claimed a state title at 152 pounds last season, claimed the crown in the 160-pound weight class by pinning Bethel's Kyle Chavez in 2:41.
